Self-care: What is it really?

Self-care is a term frequently encountered in the beauty community, often dismissed as superficial. But what does it really mean?

By definition, self-care is "the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health" (Oxford Languages). The World Health Organization expands on this, describing self-care as "the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote their own health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness, with or without the support of a health or care worker."

For Cara, doctor and CEO of Auna's Body Care, self-care holds a deeply personal significance. "When I started this business, I wasn't very focused on self-care. But when my mental health took a downturn, how I cared for my body became crucial. Self-care for me transformed into longer baths with music, body scrubs and candles, quiet time with a good book, going to bed early, and indulging in meals that lifted my spirits. Self-care and self-love became interchangeable as I learned to prioritize myself, ultimately benefiting my health."

You might wonder how beauty fits into the broader picture of self-care. While many view beauty as solely an expression of outward appearance, for others, how you look on the outside can significantly influence how you feel on the inside.

Cara explains, "Although beauty products played a crucial role in my self-care, it wasn't just about using them; it was about the meaning behind the ritual. I began to take the time to show my skin and hair the love they deserved, dedicating moments to truly care for them."

It’s often said that when you look good, you feel good—and vice versa. Cara observes, "Our physical and mental health often manifest in our skin and hair. When I took the time to notice these changes, I could care for my entire self more holistically."

This mindset is the foundation of self-care at Auna's Body Care. How you feel can empower you to live authentically or cause you to shy away from the best version of yourself. Our goal is to empower you to take control of your self-care and self-expression through beauty products.

So, don’t neglect self-care—whatever it looks like for you—because your best self depends on it.
